Learning in Law Annual Conference 2011: Experiencing legal education

28-29 January 2011, University of Warwick

UKCLE welcomed old friends and new to another stimulating learning in law conference in January 2011.

Professor John Brennan delivering the keynote address

The conference featured 41 papers around the topic of experiencing legal education encompassing the experiences of those who ‘do’ law, those who study law and those who teach law. The presenters themselves represented this range of experience, with papers from practising lawyers and academics and presentations from students in the show and tell session on day two.

Topics covered included issues around the design of the legal education experience, for example in sessions on the use of assessment, technology and research led teaching. Papers also addressed the barriers to a fulfilling experience of studying law looking at student literacy and dyslexia. Attention was given elsewhere to what law students expect and need from academic and vocational programmes, and how we can be better at representing the legal education on offer, and also ensuring that students and trainees are well prepared for what lies ahead.

The keynote address ‘What is learned in higher education? And what use is it?’ was delivered by Professor John Brennan, Director of the Centre for Higher Education Research and Information (CHERI) and Professor of Higher Education Research at The Open University.

Primarily the sessions were notable for exploring the potential for improving the experience of legal education for all concerned, and we hope that delegates left inspired to try out some of the ideas and suggestions that were discussed over the two days.

Papers, presentations and audio of the sessions are now available.
